The Heavy Metal came alive just at the time that the salvation of the previous generation, the Rock and Roll, going through a terrible breakup. Four dead in a free concert by the Rolling Stones that was held at the Altamont race track in December 1969, had shocked the community Rock and left disillusioned youth culture with pacifist ideals. Then, as Black Sabbath (Black Sabbath's debut album, released on February 13, 1970) entered the top-selling album charts in April 1970, Paul McCartney shocked the world announcing the dissolution of The Beatles. Instead of comforting his audience in an uncertain world, the giants of rock such as Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison die of overdoses in less than a year.
Black Sabbath seemed to thrive in the adverse weather, and never intended to provide answers, beyond the occasional call to love our neighbor. Although the legend often portrayed as weak and helpless, the band's debut album quickly reached the top 10 best selling albums in Britain and remained in that position for several months. In the United States had a climate hostile to dangerous hippies. Anyway, this debut album also reached the top of the U.S. charts and sold over half a million copies in its first year.
